Wright would like to bring the press box out to where the softball plate is located since softball is no longer being played in the park.

A planning committee met at Central Park back in August to get the ball rolling, Wright said.

He never came back to Ashland after college, settling down in Cincinnati. Gary Wright has some experience with revamping baseball fields, too.

He provided the finances to turn Centre College’s baseball home — Gary Wright Field — into a showplace.

Wright worked closely with some of Ashland’s greatest youth leaders, men like Ernie Chattin, Bo Mc Millen and Rex Miller. Sean Murray, the Parks and Recreation director for the city, has already set a timetable for the project. Construction would be completed by March 1, 2008, in time for games to be played on April 1.

He hopes to have drawings and bids for the renovations by Oct. The main diamond in Central Park once was the home of three high school teams — Ashland, Fairview and Holy Family.

Those are the players who were most influenced by his father, who took a team from Ashland to play in the Cincinnati Knothole Tournaments during the 1950s. Clifton Webb, whose name is still part of a memorial tournament every summer, headed the American Legion.
